A few weeks ago a bicyclist was hit, and his bike was *run over*, at an
intersection that pretty much everyone who's taken Road I has been
worried about for a while. Khal immediately responded that we've been
predicting this crash for a while (thanks Khal) but I wished that I had
some public record of it.
I'd like to make a blog post about the most dangerous intersections in
town, and possibly submit it to the paper. If we do it right we could
make it an annual thing, maybe we could get it in the paper right before
BTWD.
I'm thinking we could list the top 5 most dangerous intersections in
town, with photos and explanations of why they're dangerous and how
cyclists can mitigate the danger. Here are some I worry about:
* Diamond and West coming off the bridge (where the crash was) for a
pantload of reasons.
* Diamond and Trinity, where northbound cyclists tend to get into the
shoulder and go through the intersection; right-turning motorists then
change lanes in the intersection to turn right onto Canyon: bam. Or
left-turning traffic misjudges the speed of cyclists. Or doesn't look
far enough left to see cyclists in the shoulder-that-look-like-a-lane.
It's easy to coast through here at 20+mph and then you lose the
pedalling action that signals to everyone that you're hauling ass.
* Diamond and 38th, which wasn't a problem until there were bike lanes
to the right of a lane with heavy right-turning traffic.
* Diamond and 35th, same problem as 38th but at the bottom of a steep
hill where cyclists are going at about the same speed as everyone
else.
Please let me know what you think are the most dangerous intersections
in town, and if you have time, why you think they're dangerous.
