[nmlci] Albuquerque Century, BikeABQ, & ADA

The American Diabetes Association has taken over the Albuquerque Century ride. We wish Corey Stout good luck in his new life in Washington State.

This year there is the Tour de Cure on May 31st and the Albuquerque Century on June 6th.

Next year the Albuquerque Century will be both a pubic ride and a Tour de Cure. It will be the crown jewel of the 2010 League of American Bicyclists National Bike Rally that will be held in Albuquerque that year.  The New Mexico Touring Society will host auxiliary rides for Rally attendees. BikeABQ will arrange for speakers and other events during the Rally.

The ADA does these rides to fund raise for their cause. They hold a true volunteer event and they keep all the proceeds. Thus per ADA National direction, BikeABQ is no longer a beneficiary of the Albuquerque Century.

The Board of BikeABQ has decided in a 7 to 2 vote to seek other venues to support, ones that will benefit BikeABQ and the cycling community. There is consideration of creating our own Tour of Albuquerque ride in the future with 100% of the proceeds going to BikeABQ.

This is an amiable seperation. Lisa Johnson, local director of the American Dieabeties Association ( and she & her husband are BikeABQ members having recently joined ) will come to our next meeting to request assistance from indiviual members for the Albuquerque Century.

Please support the American Diabeties Association and the Albuqueruqe Century as you otherwise would, keeping in mind to save energy for upcoming BikeABQ events.

Thank you
Craig Degenhardt
President BikeABQ
